Egyptian giants Al Ahly have appointed Martin Lasarte as new coach on an 18-month deal.

The Uruguay-born coach succeeds Frenchman Patrice Carteron who left his job last month, following the Red Devils runners-up finish in last season’s Total CAF Champions League, losing to Tunisia’s Esperance 4-3 on aggregate. Carteron’s deputy Mohamed Youssef held the fort in the interim.

Lasarte, who previously led a handful of clubs including Uruguay giants Nacional, Chile’s Universidad Cataloica and Spain’s Real Sociedad begins his reign next week, after following Ahly’s continental mission against Ethiopia’s Jimma Aba Jifaar in Addis Ababa this weekend.

A renowned defender who had most of his career with domestic giants Nacional and Spain’s Deportivo Lacoruna, Lasarte started his coaching career with local team Rambla, before leading United Arab Emirates Al Wasl in 2002. He coached Uruguay’s River Plate, before winning two domestic league titles with Nacional, where his highlight was honing the talents of current Barcelona star Luis Suarez. After, Lasarte headed back to Spain where he led Real Sociedad to promotion in 2009. Lasarte then guided Universidad Catolica and Universidad Chile, winning three titles in Chile.

“I chose Ahly because it’s a great club and one of the best on the world”, Lasarte said as he was revealed in Cairo on Monday.

“I came here to win everything. We have to work together to achieve our goals. When you work in a very popular team like Ahly you have to make the supporters happy and satisfied, and that never happens except winning titles”, he added.

Concerning his coming to Africa for the first time, the Uruguayan says it is a no problem. “I worked in Europe for the first time before. There’s always a first time and I have to make good use of my chances”.

After finishing as losing finalists in the past two seasons, Lasarte’s immediate mission will be to bring the CAF Champions League title back to record champions Al Ahly, a trophy they last won in 2013.

Ahly are a step away from this season’s group stage after defeating Ethiopia’s Jimma Aba Jifaar 2-0 last weekend in Alexandria. The return leg is scheduled this Sunday in Addis Ababa, with the aggregate winner guaranteeing their place in the 28 December group stage draw.
