General Coordinators & Media Officers sharpen skills for tasks ahead

Over 60 persons designated as General Coordinators and Media Officers took part in a training course from 24-25 May 2018 at the CAF Headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.

The objectives of the two-day event included expanding the pool of General Coordinators and Media Officers to meet the growing demands of CAF competitions and events. The next edition of the final tournament of the Total Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon will have 24 participants instead of 16, whilst the club competitions has 16 clubs at the group stage since 2017 compared to the eight of the past. And for the first time, Media Officers have been introduced from the group stage matches of the Interclub competitions.

With majority of the attendees almost new to the field of General Coordinators and Media Officers, the course also sought to equip them with the techniques and knowledge to enhance the smooth discharge of their duties. The participants from diversified backgrounds also got the opportunity to share knowledge, exchange ideas and networking among themselves.

“The success of a football game depends largely on the General Coordinator, who steers organizational activities before, during and after the match. It is therefore very important to ensure that the personnel have the adequate training and skills to be able to deliver.

“The General Coordinator and Media Officer work hand-in-hand, hence it is important for them to understand the importance of teamwork. Also, with the expansion in our competitions, we have to widen the pool of personnel to meet the demands,” said CAF General Secretary, Amr Fahmy.

The participants were taken through theoretical and practical sessions with respect to their roles on Match Days, Non-match days amongst others. They also had a feel of the recently launched CAF Match Command Centre, the hub of information for CAF competitions and events, which is also to monitor and evaluate match officials.

Reactions of participants
Inas Mazhar (Egypt) – Media Officer
It was a truly beneficial two-day workshop for the Media Officers. We definitely needed that. It was such a great opportunity to meet with CAF's communication team and all our fellow Media Officers colleagues from the continent. The workshop has indeed helped a lot in enlightening us with the duties and responsibilities towards ensuring smooth working conditions for both media and the teams as well. We also shared experiences which will be relevant towards our duties.

Frederick Acheampong (Ghana) – General Coordinator
From afar, I always saw the job of a General Coordinator as prestigious and very simple...yes it’s a prestigious role but clearly not as simple as I thought. These past two days have been memorable, joining colleagues across Africa for the Workshop - an insightful event which will forever change my understanding of how football games are organized for life television. Key among the things I learnt is “attention to detail”.

Bakary Baldeh (Gambia) – Media Officer
It was a very interactive session and further broadens the scope of the Media Officer’s knowledge on Interclub match arrangements. It is good for the General Coordinator and Media Officer to work together during matches. The practical session was very good and the visit to the CAF Match Command Centre adds was a huge experience.

Bonnie Mugabe (Rwanda) – Media Officer
The workshop served as an opportunity to review and address challenges related to the discharge of the duties of a Media Officer. It has helped expand my horizons and embraced me with new ideas and innovations in media operations.
