CECAFA-Kagame Cup: Simba, Singida reach quarter finals

Tanzania duo, Simba and Singida, is the first teams to qualify to the quarter finals of the ongoing tournament after consecutive victories in Group C.

New sensation Habibu Kiyombo ensured debutants Singida booked their place at the knockout stage, scoring the only goal against Dakadaha of Somalia on Monday in Chamazi.

Though Singida were favoured to go past the Somali outfit, it did not come easy as they had to wait till the 54th minute to break the iron clad defence, as Kyimbo, adjudged the Best Young Player in the Tanzanian top flight last season, finished off a counter to break the deadlock.

In the other Group C match, Simba came from behind to beat Rwanda champions APR 2-1 at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam. Nkinzingabo Fiston gave APR the lead in the 69th minute but strikes from Adam Salamba and Meddie Kagere in the last quarter-hour mark was enough to send Simba into the last eight.

Both Simba and Singida have six points each, but Simba have superior goals. APR remain without a win after two games just as Dakadaha.

The tournament continues on Tuesday with Group B matches in Chamazi. Kenya’s Gor Mahia will host Lydia Ludic of Burundi and Rayon Sports (Rwanda) versus AS Ports (Djibouti).
