Holders Zambia on Saturday toiled to a 1-0 home win over Burundi in their final round first leg tie at Nkoloma Stadium in Lusaka.

The two sides went into the break barren in a match Burundi arrived unbeaten in their last four matches in the qualifiers - managing three wins and a draw.

After struggling to break through the visitors iron clad defence, Lameck Banda scored the critical goal in the dying minutes to give Zambia first leg advantage. Banda, connected a cross from Christopher Katongo three minutes from time.

Soon after, the youngster turned from hero to villain as his celebration earned him a second yellow card and his eventual sending off, ruling him out of next week’s reverse in Ngozi.

Elsewhere, surprise packets Mauritania continued with their fairytale run by holding record winners Nigeria to a 1-1 draw in Nouakchott. Abubakar Ibrahim gave the West Africans the lead on eight minutes before Mohamed Salem restored parity three minutes later.

Burkina Faso took a commanding lead thanks to a 3-1 win over Gabon in Ouagadougou. All four goals came in the first half with Kouame Jean Botue scoring the opener for ‘Les Etalons’ after just three minutes. Abdoul Fessal Tapsoba struck a brace before the half hour mark with Eric Biyoghe reducing the deficit for the visitors in between.

Earlier on Friday, visiting Senegal held Congo to a 2-2 draw at the Alphonse Massamba Debat Stadium in Brazzaville. After six minutes, Prestige Mboungou put Congo up before Amadou Sagna leveled for Senegal on 23 minutes. In the second half, Youssouph Badji gave Senegal the lead two minute past the hour mark, before Tomandzoto Borel salvaged a draw for the host with the equalizer six minutes from time.

The winners after both legs join host Niger for the final tournament scheduled for 2-17 February 2019.
