Armed Forces ended their eight-year wait for a Gambian league title by winning the 2016 / 2017 premier league. Their previous titles were in 2003 and 2009.

The ‘Khaki Boys’ as they are nicknamed wrapped up the title with two games to spare after close rivals Marimoo and Real de Banjul crumbled in the race.

A 1-1 draw with Brikama United last Monday (29 May 2017) on the final day of the season saw Armed Forces end the table tops with 49 points, ten more than debutants Marimoo.

Coach Ebou Jarra’s team managed 14 wins from the 22 matches, suffering just a defeat, against newcomers Tallinding United.

Twelve-time local champions, Real de Banjul finished third on 38 points in the 12-club league.

Serrekunda United who for the past two seasons managed to fight relegation on the final day of the season this time succumbed, joining bottom place Samger in the second tier for next season.

The champions were also GMD 300,000 richer (about 6,500 US Dollars) for the feat and will represent Gambia in next year’s Total CAF Champions League.

Meanwhile, Interior ladies completed a memorable season by beating rivals Immigration 3-0 to lift the Gambia Football Federation Women’s Cup, adding to their league title.

The security outfit retained their crown in style with a goal in the opening 33 seconds through Jabou Jabarteh before she bagged a second three minute later. Isha Saidykhan ensured victory with the third goal.

Interior went home with a giant trophy and a cheque for GMD 75,000 (about 1,600 US Dollars) and medals. They also received GMD 150,000 (about 3,200 US Dollars) for winning the league.
