Make or break for Yanga

Make or break for Yanga

It’s a make or break for Young Africans of Tanzania when they face Gor Mahia in a Day Four clash on Sunday at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.

‘Yanga’ as the Tanzanians are nicknamed are still rooted at the bottom of Group D with just a point after three games. And they need nothing short of the maximum points to remain in the hunt for a place at the next stage or bid farewell to their continental ambitions.

Their poor form has further been affected financial problems which saw players boycott training session over unpaid bonuses after the 4-0 loss to Gor Mahia in Nairobi last week.

DR Congo-born coach of Yanga, Mwinyi Zahera, who joined the Jangwani based outfit two months ago, is hoping his charges can revive their campaign with victory against their Kenya guests despite the problems.

“Our plans are in tatters because we couldn’t train for almost five days because of economic hardship facing the club as players were demanding their salaries and signing-on fees. It is very hard for us.

“We know that this game against Gor Mahia is the only chance to revive our hopes to go through the next stage. It is a must win game and we need to work hard to make it happen,” Zahera said.

Yanga resumed training on Wednesday after days of boycott but Zahera believes that if they can get the best of Gor Mahia if they remain fully concentrated.

“Gor Mahia is a good team and we have to be ready for them, but looking at our condition we cannot promise more,” he said.

Yanga has been in an unfamiliar form since the departure of Zambian trainer, George Lwandamina last April, with only a win to show in 15 matches.
