Tanzania champions, Simba, started their group phase campaign on a high after beating JS Saoura of Algeria 3-0 on Saturday in their Group D opener at the National Stadium, Dar es Salaam.
A second half brace from substitute Meddie Kagere coupled with Emmanuel Okwi’s opener was enough to secure victory for Simba, making an appearance at this stage for the first time in over decade.
Ugandan-import Okwi come closer to breaking the deadlock in the 18th minute, but his effort hit the crossbar, whilst the rebound from John Bocco was no trouble for JS Saoura goalie, Khaled Boukacem.
The visitors struggled in search of their feet but Imadi Boubekeur and Ibrahim Farh tried Simba goalie Aishi Manula, but the latter proved equal to the task. Simba were dealt a blow when Bocco sustained an injury nine minutes before the break and was replaced by Kagere.
Just before the break, Okwi netted the opener for Simba, finishing off a swift build up, which left Saoura goalie, Boukacem with no option.
Kagere double the lead for the hosts in the 51st minute from an Okwi assist before completing his brace on 67 minutes to snatch victory in the Group D encounter.
Patrick Aussems (Head Coach, Simba)
JS Saoura is a good side but we managed to control the tempo of the game and got the three points at home. The most important thing now is to focus on the coming games. It is a group stage so we are looking at the possibility of getting as many points as we can.
John Bocco(Captain, Simba)
We played well in both halves and managed to bag three goals. It is important that we have started our campaign on a good note and a crucial victory at home. We are now looking forward to the two upcoming away games.
Nabil Neghez (Head Coach, JS Saoura)
