It took 450 minutes for Egypt to secure their maiden victory in the history of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations after beating Zimbabwe 1-0 on Tuesday in Yaounde.

Salma Ahmed wrote her name in Egyptian women’s football folklore as her 82nd minute goal handed the Lady Pharaohs their first ever win at the final tournament and put her side in serious contention for a place at the next round.

The Egyptians are back in the finals of the eight team tournament after their participation in the maiden edition in 1998 in Nigeria where they suffered losses to DR Congo (1-4), Nigeria (0-6) and Morocco (1-4).

After a 0-2 defeat to host Cameroon in the tournament opener last Saturday, the Pharaohs bounced back in style with a narrow win over Zimbabwe in a match of equals.

Egypt has three points, three shy of leaders Cameroon. Zimbabwe and South Africa follow in that order with a point each.

The fairly balanced game was dominated by midfield action from both sides, looking for their first win. Zimbabwe forward Rutendo Makore missed a good opportunity to give her side the lead, heading wide from close range on the quarter-hour mark.

The Egyptians responded five minutes later but Ahmed’s header was no problem for Zimbabwe goalie Chido Dzingirai.

The two teams improved in the second half exhibiting some brilliant piece of football that drew applauds from the fans.

With a stalemate in sight, Ahmed broke the deadlock by tapping home from close range eight minutes from time to settle matters.

Zimbabwe almost responded but their goal two minutes later was disallowed, as they crushed to their first defeat of the campaign.

Egypt travels Limbe to face South Africa on Friday whilst Zimbabwe squares host Cameroon in Yaounde same time.
